The Brooklyn duo is playing XPO 929 Friday night with Boys Who Say No, Ritz Riot and Unstoppable Death Machines. They also play The Studio at Webster Hall on May 15 and Shea Stadium on May 19.

Signer Faris Badwan began the evening with "Changing the Rain," the second single from the band’s latest LP, Skying, fresh from it being named UK Album of the Year by NME. He welcomed the crowd eagerly and noted respectfully Brooklyn's now well-known and widely-respected scene, giving props to those who support live music and paying homage to everyone from The Psychedelic Furs and The Cramps to The Fall.

The enthusiastic all-in-black crowd was attentive while being transported through a languid and laconic journey covering the band's back catalog, spanning three albums, but falling short of the 2005 song and Chris Cunningham-directed video that made them famous, "Sheena Is a Parasite."

Crowd favorites were definitely the moody and breathy pop melodies like "Sea Within and Sea" and "Can See Through You," both from the self-produced 2009 LP Primary Colors, though the unwavering and hypnotic "Moving Further Away," with its longish climax, was even more emotive.

The ever fashion-forward Barnes dashed out on stage looking rightly confident. With more than six weeks of touring behind him, of Montreal's live sound is rich and stylishly flexible. Currently an eight-piece, the band strut their musical muscle through a hearty selection of old and new material with the addition of woodwinds/horns and violin courtesy of new players Zac Colwell and Kishi Bashi respectively. Both nights opened with back-to back tracks from Paralytic Stalks ("Gelid Ascent" and "Spiteful Intervention") followed by a smattering of classic crowd-pleasing hits throughout ("She's a Rejector", "Suffer For Fashion", and "Gronlandic Edit"). Obsessed fans were also kept sated with rousing and energetic renditions of "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal," the 12-minute climax-baiting rock song that was the hallmark of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (2007).

The sets were carefully arranged so any fan — new or old — was delighted. Those who attended the first performance heard the massive crescendo-like build of new tracks like the hard-rocking "Ye, Renew the Plaintiff" and older, verbally complex pop masterpieces like "Forecast Fascist Future," while Saturday's set included ample selections from False Priest ("Godly Intersex" and "Do You Mutilate?"). Every moment was further enhanced by wildly colorful projections that were carefully coordinated with the music—a production executed by Barnes's brother David, and his wife, Nina, via an ordinary Xbox and iPad.

Both nights were an absolute hit with New York fans who seemed rather adrenalin-pumped after clapping and singing along with a seamless medley of favorites from Skeletal Lamping (2008). Others were hoping for a second encore, a testament to the level of adoration that filled the packed club.

Although the national tour is nearly over, be sure to catch of Montreal the next time they come though town for a show that is among the most artfully produced and lovingly crafted indie productions around. For that alone Kevin Barnes is an honorary New Yorker in my mind, a perfect mirror for our perplexed, ever-haunted, and unstable personalities, and our ability to keep things at 130 beats-per-minute at all times.
